About Down to the Wire Fencing Competition

Our Commitment to Fencing Excellence

Down to the Wire is New Zealand’s premier rural fencing competition, founded in 2024 at the Ellesmere A&P Show by two brothers with a shared passion for both fencing excellence and dynamic event experiences. What began as an idea to elevate fencing as a competitive sport has quickly grown into a standout attraction at one of the South Island’s largest annual rural showcases, drawing over 15,000 attendees each year.

This unique event brings together New Zealand's top fencing talent, from seasoned professionals to up-and-coming youth competitors, to compete under pressure and demonstrate skill, speed, and technique. Down to the Wire celebrates the precision, endurance, and craftsmanship that defines elite fencing in New Zealand.

Why It Matters

Fencing is more than just wire and posts, it's a cornerstone of our agricultural economy and a skill passed down through generations. By putting fencing in the spotlight, we’re not just running a competition, we’re telling the story of rural New Zealand, one wire at a time.

Whether you’re a competitor, a rural contractor, an industry sponsor, or a spectator who loves a good show of skill and grit, Down to the Wire offers something unique and undeniably Kiwi.
